Basic Statistics

Wageningen Campus

This is a refresher course aimed at PhD candidates. The level is that of a second course in Statistics. We will refresh basic knowledge of Probability, Statistical Inference (Estimation with confidence intervals and Testing), t-tests, standard cases of the Linear Model: Regression, ANOVA and ANCOVA. For our analyses we use software written in R. Programs will be provided.

Other topics: Experimental Design, Non-parametric Tests, and Chi-square Tests. Some time is reserved to discuss statistical problems of the participants.

Programme
  • Day 1: Getting acquainted with R, descriptive statistics, probability calculus, sampling distributions, confidence interval for population mean, one-sample t-test
  • Day 2: 2-independent-samples + paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, non-parametric tests
  • Day 3: Experimental design, power, sample size, two-way ANOVA, simple linear regression
  • Day 4: Simple linear regression, multiple linear regression
  • Day 5: ANCOVA and General Linear Models

Accommodation Accommodation is not included in the fee of the course, but there are several possibilities in Wageningen. For non-WUR PE&RC members 50% of the accommodation costs can be reimbursed with a maximum of €30,- per night, please contact the PE&RC Office (office.pe@wur.nl) for more information.
For information on B&B's and hotels in Wageningen please visit Short Stay Wageningen. Furthermore Airbnb offers several rooms in the area. Finally, there are a number of groups on Facebook where students announce subrent possibilities and things like that. Note that besides the restaurants in Wageningen, there are also options to have dinner on Wageningen Campus.
